description Amazon Chess Overview
Amazon Chess is a chess variant that replaces the standard queen with an amazon piece. The amazon combines the queen's movement along ranks, files, and diagonals with the knight's ability to jump in an L-shaped move. Because the piece has greater mobility than a queen, the variant changes tactical threats and strategic balance while retaining the familiar board and general structure of orthodox chess.
help Amazon Chess FAQ
What is the amazon piece in Amazon Chess?
The amazon combines the movement of a standard queen with the movement of a knight. It can move along ranks, files, and diagonals, and it can also jump in an L-shaped knight move.
How is Amazon Chess different from standard chess?
The main change is that the standard queen is replaced by the much more mobile amazon piece. Because it combines queen and knight movement, attacks and defenses can be stronger and tactical positions can change quickly.
Can the amazon jump over pieces?
The amazon can jump when using its knight-style move. Its queen-style movement still follows the usual sliding movement rules and cannot pass through intervening pieces.
Why does Amazon Chess have a stronger queen-like piece?
The amazon has more mobility than a queen because it adds the knight's jumping attack. That extra reach makes the variant substantially different from standard chess, especially around king safety and defended squares.
