description Apus Overview
Apus is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union and lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It represents a bird of paradise, a name linked to the historical European belief that these birds lacked feet; the Greek-derived name Apus means "without feet." Petrus Plancius introduced the figure on a 1598 celestial globe, and Johann Bayer included it in his 1603 star atlas Uranometria. [IAU](https://iauarchive.eso.org/public/themes/constellations/)
