description Bimbox Overview
Bimbox was an American queercore zine created in Chicago during the early 1990s. Its contents combined queer politics with an explicitly feminist perspective and criticism of mainstream gay culture, giving the publication a confrontational role within the underground queer press. It is of interest to readers studying LGBTQ+ publishing, queercore, feminist activism, and independent zine culture.
help Bimbox FAQ
Who made Bimbox, and where did it circulate?
The best-documented accounts associate Bimbox with Toronto queercore figures Johnny Noxzema and Rex Boy in the early 1990s. Chicago was another important North American scene, including the 1991 Spew gathering, but it is not the city most archival references give for Bimbox. What made Bimbox a queercore zine?
In the early 1990s, it used DIY provocation to challenge homophobia in punk and the assimilationist politics of mainstream gay and lesbian culture. Its confrontational voice placed queer identity, sex, politics, and punk community inside the same small-press space.
What kind of material appears in Bimbox?
Surviving descriptions of Bimbox mention queer-punk stories, explicit cut-and-paste images, music and zine reviews, and feminist material. An archive description for issue 7 lists a timeline of women in rock and an article by an S/M dyke. ([Queer zine archive](https://holytitclamps.com/compl12.html))
How does Bimbox relate to J.D.'s?
Both belong to Toronto's early queercore network, but J.D.'s was created by G.B. Jones and Bruce LaBruce, while Bimbox is associated with Johnny Noxzema and Rex Boy. That makes Bimbox a related zine, not a later issue or sequel to J.D.'s.
