Black pool, originally called everlasting pool, was a form of pocket billiards recorded from 1862 and played mainly in the late nineteenth century. Each player had a designated ball, and potting an opponent's ball removed one of that opponent's lives; potting the black ball made all opponents pay a life. Historical accounts place black pool among the pool games later combined with pyramid pool in the development of snooker.
