description DynDNS Overview

DynDNS is a dynamic DNS service that maps domain names to frequently changing IP addresses, commonly used for remote access to home networks and servers.

help DynDNS FAQ

What is DynDNS used for?

DynDNS maps a changing public IP address to a stable hostname. This lets users reach a home network, camera system, VPN, or server even when their internet provider changes the address.

Does DynDNS replace a VPN?

No. DynDNS provides a name that points to an IP address, but it does not encrypt remote connections. A VPN, HTTPS, or another secure access method is still needed to protect the service itself.

What happens when a home IP address changes?

A DynDNS update client or compatible router detects the new address and updates the hostname record. The result is a short period of propagation or reconnection instead of having to find the new IP manually.

Can DynDNS be used for remote access to a home server?

Yes, it can provide a stable hostname for a home server or network service. The router must still be configured safely, and exposing an administrative service directly to the internet can create security risks.
