Grosstarock

description Grosstarock Overview

Grosstarock, also called Großtarock or German Taroc, is an old three-player trick-taking game in the Tarock family. The classical form uses the complete 78-card Tarot pack, including 21 permanent trumps and the Fool, and emerged in German-speaking Europe during the eighteenth century. It is distinct from the later Viennese Grosstarock, which uses a shorter 54-card pack; the related Danish game Tarok preserves the full-pack tradition.

help Grosstarock FAQ

How many people and cards does Grosstarock use?

Classical Grosstarock is a three-player trick-taking game using the full 78-card Tarot or Tarock pack. The pack contains 21 permanent trumps plus the Fool, alongside the four suits.

What does the Fool do in Grosstarock?

The Fool is usually treated as an 'Excuse' rather than a normal trump that simply wins a trick. Because historical Tarock rules vary, players should agree on the Fool's return and scoring rule before dealing.

When and where did Grosstarock originate?

It emerged in the German-speaking world around the eighteenth century, and early German rules were printed in 1754. It is related to Tarock games such as Danish Tarok, but classical Grosstarock is not the later 54-card Viennese Grosstarock ([Grosstarock overview](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grosstarock)).
