Guyana

description Guyana Overview

Guyana is a country on South America's northern Atlantic coast and the only country on the continent where English is the official language. Independent from the United Kingdom in 1966, it hosts the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in its capital, Georgetown. Its population is largely of Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese descent. Most of the country lies under rainforest on the Guiana Shield, including Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's most powerful waterfalls, and since 2015 major offshore oil discoveries have driven rapid economic growth.
