Jingu Guyot

description Jingu Guyot Overview

Jingu Guyot is a flat-topped underwater volcano (guyot) located in the Pacific Ocean as part of the Emperor Seamount chain. It formed approximately 55 million years ago during the Paleocene to Eocene epochs, making it one of the older seamounts in the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain that stretches across the northern Pacific Ocean. The guyot has a distinctive twin-peaked structure that suggests it was formed by two separate volcanic centers that eventually coalesced. Like other guyots in the chain, Jingu was once an above-water volcanic island that gradually subsided as it moved away from the hotspot and the oceanic crust cooled and sank.

help Jingu Guyot FAQ

What is Jingu Guyot?

Jingu Guyot is a flat-topped underwater volcano in the Pacific Ocean. It forms part of the Emperor Seamount chain.

How old is Jingu Guyot?

Jingu Guyot formed approximately 55 million years ago, around the Paleocene to Eocene transition. That age makes it one of the older seamounts in the Hawaiian-Emperor chain.

Why is Jingu Guyot flat-topped?

Its volcanic summit was once near or above sea level, where wave erosion flattened it. Later subsidence placed the eroded summit beneath the Pacific.

What is the Emperor Seamount chain?

It is a long chain of volcanic mountains beneath the Pacific Ocean, linked to the movement of the Pacific Plate over a volcanic source. Jingu Guyot is one of its older submerged volcanoes.
