Krustlet is an open-source tool enabling developers to package any application—regardless of language or framework—into lightweight, reproducible container images using a declarative configuration file.

help Krustlet FAQ

What is Krustlet actually used for?

Krustlet is an open-source Kubernetes kubelet written in Rust for running WebAssembly workloads. It acts like a Kubernetes node and listens for pods assigned to it. [Krustlet documentation](https://docs.krustlet.dev/intro/intro/)

Does Krustlet package any application into a container image?

No, the official documentation says an application must be compiled to WebAssembly and pushed to a container registry before Krustlet can run it. Krustlet is a workload runtime and kubelet, not a general-purpose image builder.

How does Krustlet decide which Kubernetes pods to run?

The Kubernetes scheduler assigns pods to a Krustlet node when their tolerations match the node. Krustlet listens to the event stream for those assignments and fetches the WebAssembly module.

Is Krustlet production-ready?

The project website labels Krustlet experimental, and its GitHub README says the project is not actively maintained. It should therefore be treated as an experimental Kubernetes and WebAssembly tool. [Project repository](https://github.com/krustlet/krustlet)
