The [mottled owl](https://www.fws.gov/species/mottled-owl-strix-virgata) (*Strix virgata*) is a medium-sized, mostly nocturnal owl in the family Strigidae. Its range extends from Mexico through Central America and much of South America, where it uses forests, forest edges, thickets and other wooded habitats from lowlands into foothills and montane areas. Brown mottling on the head and back, pale underparts with vertical streaks, dark eyes and a rounded head without ear tufts are useful identification features.
