help Partition Arch FAQ

Where is Partition Arch?

Partition Arch is in the Devils Garden area of Arches National Park in Utah. It formed in a narrow sandstone fin and has two openings separated by a section of rock.

How do you reach Partition Arch?

It is reached by a short spur from the Devils Garden Trail between Landscape Arch and Double O Arch. The National Park Service lists the Partition Arch spur among the optional side trails in that section.

Why is it called Partition Arch?

The arch has two openings divided by a solid pillar or partition of sandstone. That split appearance gives the formation its descriptive name.

What caused the arches in Devils Garden to form?

Rainwater erodes parallel fractures in sandstone fins, and the openings grow as weaker rock is removed. The fins themselves developed in a landscape shaped by uplift and erosion above buried salt deposits.
