Scarto

description Scarto Overview

Scarto is an Italian trick-taking game associated with Piedmont and played with a tarot pack. Its name refers to the preliminary discard stage, in which players set aside unwanted cards before the main trick-taking phase begins. The game is generally described as a three-player variant and combines a fixed trump structure with rules for exchanging or discarding cards.

help Scarto FAQ

How many people play Scarto, and how many cards are used?

Scarto is normally a three-player trick-taking game using the 78-card Tarocco Piemontese pack. Each player receives 25 cards, leaving a three-card stock.

What does the discard stage do in Scarto?

The dealer takes the three-card stock and then discards three cards from the hand. In common rules, those discarded cards count with the dealer's captured cards at scoring time.

What happens when a player cannot follow suit in Scarto?

A player must follow the led suit when possible, and otherwise plays a trump if one is available. The game is commonly played counter-clockwise, with the player to the dealer's right leading the first trick.

How is Scarto scored?

Players count the card points in their captured cards, often counting them in groups of three with a two-point deduction. Common rules then apply a 26-point baseline to determine the hand scores.
