help Spaceways FAQ

Who edited Spaceways?

Harry Warner Jr. edited and published Spaceways from Hagerstown, Maryland, with Jim Avery co-editing at one point. The fanzine ran from 1938 to 1942, placing it in the prewar U.S. fan network. ([Fanac archive](https://www.fanac.org/fanzines/Spaceways/))

What did Spaceways cover?

It treated science fiction and fantasy broadly, with material on rocketry, Esperanto, fan writing, and fandom news. Robert A. W. Lowndes later cited it as a wide-ranging fan magazine because it covered the field in many directions.

How many issues of Spaceways were published?

The Fanac index preserves 31 issues, beginning with issue 1 in November 1938 and ending with the 1942 run. Individual issues were mimeographed, including a 24-page issue 2 from January 1939.

Why did Spaceways stop in 1942?

War-time shortages made mimeograph supplies expensive, and Harry Warner Jr. also had limited access to a typewriter and expected fan participation to fall as people were drafted. Publication was suspended in October 1942 while Spaceways was still a leading fan title.
