help Train Simulator Classic FAQ
Is Train Simulator Classic the same game as the old RailWorks?
Yes. The title launched as RailWorks in 2009, went through years of annual Train Simulator 20xx editions, and was renamed Train Simulator Classic in 2023. It is developed and published by Dovetail Games.
What's the difference between Train Simulator Classic and Train Sim World?
Train Sim World is Dovetail Games' newer line built on a modern engine, while Train Simulator Classic runs on the long-standing legacy engine that dates back to the RailWorks era. Classic remains supported partly because its huge back catalog of routes and locomotives does not carry over to the newer game.
Why do people joke about how expensive Train Simulator's DLC is?
The game sells an enormous number of individual route and locomotive add-ons, and buying the entire catalog has been widely reported to cost several thousand dollars in total. The base game is cheap, but the a la carte DLC model has become a running joke in the gaming community.
Which regions and routes does Train Simulator Classic cover?
Content spans railways in Britain, Germany, North America, and other regions, delivered through the base game plus an extensive DLC library on Steam. Routes range from historic British main lines to modern US freight corridors.
