description TrueNAS Replication Overview

TrueNAS Replication provides asynchronous data replication between designated pools, ensuring continuous availability by automatically copying data changes to a secondary location for rapid recovery in case of primary system failure.

help TrueNAS Replication FAQ

How does TrueNAS Replication copy data?

TrueNAS Replication uses ZFS send and receive to transfer snapshots from one pool to another. The destination receives changed blocks from selected snapshots instead of a complete file copy each time.

Is TrueNAS Replication synchronous or asynchronous?

It is normally asynchronous, so the secondary system can lag behind the primary by the replication schedule. The recovery-point gap depends on how often snapshots and replication jobs run.

Can TrueNAS replicate between two servers?

Yes, TrueNAS can replicate datasets between supported TrueNAS systems over a network. The destination must have enough space and compatible dataset and snapshot settings for the replication task.

Can replicated TrueNAS data be used immediately as live files?

The replicated dataset is generally managed as a destination copy and may need promotion or rollback before becoming the active workload. Replication is not the same as simultaneous active-active file access.
