description Upwords Overview
Upwords is a tile-based word board game invented by Elliot Rudell. Players form words on a grid and may stack tiles on existing letters, allowing a placed word to be changed by building upward while sharing letters with words already on the board. The vertical stacking mechanic distinguishes it from flat word games and makes it suitable for players who enjoy vocabulary, spatial planning, and tactical tile placement.
help Upwords FAQ
How does the stacking mechanic work in Upwords?
Players can place letters on top of existing letters to change a word, as long as the resulting words are legal. Words are built across or down on the grid, and diagonal play is not allowed.
How many people can play Upwords, and how many tiles are included?
The Hasbro version is designed for 2 to 4 players ages 8 and up. It includes 100 letter tiles and each player starts with a rack of seven tiles.
How are stacked words scored in Upwords?
A word that is only one tile high scores 2 points per letter tile. A word containing stacked letters scores 1 point for every tile in the stack, including the tiles underneath the visible letters.
Who invented Upwords, and how is it different from Scrabble?
Elliot Rudell invented Upwords. Like Scrabble, it uses letter tiles on a word board, but Upwords lets players build upward and transform existing words instead of only extending them across the grid.
