description VirtueMart Overview
VirtueMart is an open-source e-commerce extension for Joomla, the PHP-based content-management system. It adds store functions such as product catalogs, shopping carts, customer accounts, order processing, and checkout to a Joomla site, with the exact capabilities depending on the installed version and configuration. It is aimed at organizations that want to operate a self-hosted online store within the Joomla ecosystem rather than use a separate hosted store builder.
help VirtueMart FAQ
What does VirtueMart add to Joomla?
VirtueMart adds e-commerce functions to Joomla, including product catalogs, shopping carts, customer accounts, order processing, and checkout. The result is a Joomla website that can also operate as an online store.
Does VirtueMart require Joomla?
Yes, VirtueMart is built as an extension for Joomla rather than as a separate hosted store platform. A site owner therefore needs Joomla hosting and must manage compatibility between Joomla, VirtueMart, templates, and extensions.
How does VirtueMart compare with WooCommerce?
VirtueMart is tied to Joomla, while WooCommerce is tied to WordPress. The better fit usually depends on whether the site already uses Joomla or WordPress and which payment, shipping, and design extensions are available.
Can VirtueMart process orders and payments?
VirtueMart supports order and checkout workflows, with payment capabilities supplied through compatible payment methods or extensions. Store owners should verify gateway support for their country and Joomla version before choosing it.
