help Whiteout FAQ
Is Whiteout based on a book or comic?
Yes — it adapts Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber's Oni Press graphic novel Whiteout, a murder-mystery comic set in Antarctica. Rucka is better known today as a major comics and novel writer (Batwoman, the Atticus Kodiak series).
Who does Kate Beckinsale play in Whiteout?
She plays U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, investigating what's billed as Antarctica's first murder just as winter darkness closes in. Gabriel Macht and Tom Skerritt co-star at the research station.
Who directed Whiteout and when was it released?
Dominic Sena directed it — he previously helmed Gone in Sixty Seconds and Swordfish — with production by Dark Castle Entertainment and distribution by Warner Bros. It hit theaters in September 2009.
Did Whiteout do well at the box office?
No — it reportedly grossed under $20 million worldwide and was panned by critics, making it one of Kate Beckinsale's least successful lead roles outside the Underworld franchise. It has since settled into cult-ish cable rotation status.
