Boris Spassky

The 10th World Champion, Boris Spassky is best known as the stoic defender of the title against Bobby Fischer in the 1972 'Match of the Century.' However, he was a formidable champion in his own right, known for a universal, well-rounded style that allowed him to excel in all phases of the game. He defeated Tigran Petrosian for the title in 1969. Spassky was a multi-time USSR Champion and remained a strong player for decades, even reaching the Candidates final in 1977. His classical understanding and sportsmanship are highly regarded.
