help Madshus Panorama M78 FAQ
What does the M78 name mean on the Madshus Panorama M78?
The M78 refers to its 78mm waist width, making it the wider, more float-oriented end of the Panorama backcountry touring line. That width gives better support in soft and breaking snow while still being manageable on harder snow thanks to full metal edges.
What bindings work on the Madshus Panorama M78?
As a metal-edge backcountry Nordic ski, it pairs with touring systems like NNN-BC, Xplore, or traditional 75mm three-pin telemark bindings rather than alpine bindings. Match the boot to whichever binding standard you choose, since they're not interchangeable.
Can you use the Panorama M78 at a groomed Nordic center?
You can—it'll track up fine in set tracks but is noticeably slower and less efficient than a skinny skate or classic ski on groomed corduroy. The trade-off is that it opens up ungroomed forest roads and rolling off-trail terrain that a track ski handles poorly.
How does the M78 compare to other Madshus Panorama widths?
Madshus, the Norwegian ski maker founded back in 1906, has offered the Panorama line in narrower widths such as the M62, which tracks better and is quicker on firm snow. Going up to the 78mm waist buys float in deeper, softer conditions at the cost of some efficiency.
