help Camp Schwab FAQ
Where is Camp Schwab?
Camp Schwab is a US Marine Corps camp in northern Okinawa, near Henoko and Nago. Japan's Ministry of Defense lists Camp Schwab in Nago City, while Marine Corps Base Camp Butler identifies it as one of the Okinawa camps under its command.
Why is Camp Schwab part of the Futenma relocation debate?
The relocation plan has identified the Henoko-Schwab area as the proposed site for replacement facilities for Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. The issue is politically and environmentally contested in Okinawa, so the existing camp should be distinguished from the proposed replacement airfield.
Who is Camp Schwab named after?
It was named in 1959 for US Marine Albert E. Schwab, who received the Medal of Honor for actions on Okinawa during World War II. The name refers to an individual Marine, not to the nearby city of Nago.
Is Camp Schwab part of Marine Corps Base Camp Butler?
Yes, official Marine Corps newcomer information lists Camp Schwab among the camps within Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler. The command structure is why references to Camp Butler and Camp Schwab often appear together even though they are separate locations.
