help Cayenne FAQ

How many people play Cayenne and what cards are used?

Historical Cayenne Whist rules use four players in two partnerships, with each player receiving 13 cards from a standard 52-card pack. Some rule sets also use a second pack to establish the special Cayenne suit. [Foster's Complete Hoyle](https://readingroo.ms/5/3/8/8/53881/53881-h/53881-h.htm)

What does the Cayenne card do?

The revealed Cayenne card does not automatically become trump; its suit establishes the order of preference for possible trump suits. That multiplier can change the value of tricks and honor cards during the deal.

What contracts can be announced in Cayenne?

A historical rule set includes Cayenne, the second, third, or fourth color, Grand with no trump, and Nullo with no trump and an attempt to lose tricks. The dealer or the dealer's partner makes the contract after seeing the 13-card hands.

How is Cayenne different from Écarté?

Écarté is normally a two-player game using a 32-card pack, with five cards dealt to each player and a goal of winning three of five tricks. Cayenne uses four-player partnerships, 13-card hands, a special suit-ranking system, and contract choices.
