description Smooth Thimble Cap Overview
The smooth thimble cap is the common name for Verpa conica, an ascomycete in the morel family Morchellaceae. It appears in spring in moist woodland and riparian habitats across parts of the Northern Hemisphere, where it grows from the ground rather than on decaying wood. Its brown, thimble-shaped cap is attached to the pale stalk only at the top, leaving most of the cap hanging free; that structure distinguishes it from true morels and is important for field identification. Some sources list it as edible after cooking, but its morel-like appearance does not remove the need for careful identification.
help Smooth Thimble Cap FAQ
What is the smooth thimble cap mushroom?
The smooth thimble cap is the common name for Verpa conica, an ascomycete in the morel family Morchellaceae. It appears in spring, often in moist woodland and riparian habitats.
Where does Verpa conica grow?
It grows from the ground in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, especially in damp woodland and along waterways. Unlike many wood-decaying fungi, it is not typically described as growing directly on decaying wood.
Is the smooth thimble cap a true morel?
Verpa conica is related to true morels because both belong to the family Morchellaceae, but it is a Verpa rather than a Morchella species. Its cap and stem attachment also differ from the classic hollow true-morel form.
Can the smooth thimble cap be eaten?
Edibility reports for Verpa species are not uniform, and mistaken identification can be dangerous. Anyone considering wild mushrooms should rely on a qualified local expert because appearance alone cannot establish safe identification.
