description Tokyo Marathon Overview
Held annually in Japan's capital, the Tokyo Marathon brings a large international field onto the streets of central Tokyo. Its place among the World Marathon Majors gives it a distinct role in international distance running, while its fast urban course attracts runners pursuing a personal best. Participation has exceeded 35,000 runners, making the scale of the event an important part of its character. The race combines competitive marathon running with a route through a densely built city, where broad roads and recognizable neighborhoods shape the experience.
It suits experienced runners seeking an international competition, but describing it as primarily for experienced athletes overlooks its wider field of recreational participants. For runners interested in a major city marathon, Tokyo offers the appeal of a Japanese setting alongside the demands of the full marathon distance.
