Overview

Monica Seles's career is one of the great 'what if' stories in sports. Bursting onto the scene as a teenager, she revolutionized power baseline tennis with her fierce two-handed strokes off both wings and loud grunt. She won eight Grand Slam titles before her 20th birthday and famously ended Steffi Graf's 186-week reign as World No. 1 in 1991. Seles's trajectory was tragically altered in 1993 when she was stabbed on court by a deranged fan. Though she returned to win one more major (the 1996 Australian Open), she was never quite the same dominant force. At her peak, her aggressive, early-ball striking made her nearly unbeatable, and many believe she was on pace to challenge the all-time records.
