One Night in Miami

The film is a fictionalized imagining of a real historical event where Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered in a Miami hotel room in 1964. While the meeting definitely happened, the specific conversations are adapted from Kemp Powers' stage play. It explores their real-life debates regarding fame and the Civil Rights Movement.

The film was directed by Academy Award-winning actress Regina King, marking her feature film directorial debut. It was released on Amazon Prime Video in late 2020 to critical acclaim. Her direction focused heavily on the emotional weight of the dialogue between the four leads.

The film features a star-studded cast, with Leslie Odom Jr. playing the legendary singer Sam Cooke and Kingsley Ben-Adir portraying Malcolm X. Eli Goree stars as Muhammad Ali, and Aldis Hodge plays Jim Brown. Leslie Odom Jr. received an Academy Award nomination for his performance.

The men gathered to celebrate the 22-year-old Cassius Clay defeating Sonny Liston to win the heavyweight boxing championship in February 1964. Due to segregation laws at the time, Clay could not stay at the Hampton House hotel where he celebrated, so the men held a private gathering. This night also preceded Clay's official announcement of his conversion to the Nation of Islam and name change to Muhammad Ali.
