Wittmann Weingut

Wittmann farms several classified Grosses Gewächs (grand cru) vineyards in Westhofen, most notably Morstein, Kirchspiel, Aulerde, and Brunnenhäuschen, each defined by different limestone and clay-marl soil compositions. The Morstein and Kirchspiel sites in particular produce some of the Rheinhessen's most acclaimed dry Rieslings, wines that have helped redefine the region's reputation for quality over the past two decades.

Philipp Wittmann began transitioning the estate to organic farming in the early 1990s and achieved full biodynamic certification in the early 2000s, making it one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Germany. The estate uses its own compost preparations and follows the biodynamic calendar, practices that Philipp Wittmann credits with producing healthier soils and more expressive, site-transparent wines.

Wittmann is recognized as one of Germany's leading producers of dry (trocken) Riesling, particularly the Grosses Gewächs bottlings from Westhofen's limestone-rich vineyards. Unlike the sweeter Prädikat styles historically associated with German Riesling, Wittmann's wines emphasize minerality, precise acidity, and terroir expression, placing them stylistically closer to top white Burgundies than to traditional off-dry Mosel Rieslings.

Philipp Wittmann leads the estate in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, continuing a family winemaking tradition that dates back to the mid-17th century. Under his direction since the 1990s, the estate has become one of the most influential in Germany's dry Riesling movement, and Philipp is frequently cited among the country's most respected winemakers alongside peers like Keller and Schäfer-Fröhlich.
