Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, is a Palestinian politician and a senior figure in Fatah. He was elected president of the Palestinian National Authority in January 2005 and has served as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization since 2004. He also holds the title President of the State of Palestine, a designation adopted through the PLO Central Council in 2008. Abbas represented the PLO during the signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords.
