description Apple Pro Display XDR Overview
Apple's Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch professional monitor with a 6K LCD panel, intended for demanding image and video work. Its wide P3 color gamut supports workflows that require a broader range of colors than standard sRGB displays. A locally dimmed LED backlight enables high brightness and contrast for reviewing HDR material, while the resolution provides space for detailed images and editing tools. Photographers can use it for close inspection and color-managed editing, while HDR video work is another central application.
Its value depends on a compatible computer and an appropriately configured workflow, rather than the display alone guaranteeing accurate results. Within professional monitors, its defining combination is a large, high-resolution panel and HDR capability. The backlight should be described as a full-array LED system, rather than mini-LED.
help Apple Pro Display XDR FAQ
Do you have to buy the stand separately for the Apple Pro Display XDR?
Yes, the monitor does not come with a stand in the box, meaning you must purchase the proprietary Apple Pro Stand or a VESA mount adapter. The magnetic Apple Pro Stand allows for height adjustment and easy rotation to portrait mode, but it costs $999 separately.
What is the contrast ratio of the Apple Pro Display XDR?
Apple claims the Pro Display XDR achieves a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio thanks to its extremely localized dimming zones. While it doesn't offer the infinite contrast of a true OLED display, it vastly outperforms standard IPS edge-lit monitors.
Can I use the Apple Pro Display XDR with a standard Windows PC?
While it connects via a standard DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 3 cable, using it with a Windows PC is difficult because it lacks physical buttons for brightness control. You need third-party software or specific monitor profiles to adjust the brightness and volume, as these are normally controlled natively via macOS.
