description AWS Server Migration Service Overview
AWS Server Migration Service was an agentless service from Amazon Web Services for moving virtual machines and server workloads from on-premises environments into AWS. It supported scheduled, incremental replication of virtual machine images, allowing organizations to prepare and coordinate migrations without installing software inside the source operating system. AWS discontinued the service in March 2022 and replaced it with AWS Application Migration Service.
help AWS Server Migration Service FAQ
What did AWS Server Migration Service do?
AWS Server Migration Service, commonly called SMS, was an agentless AWS service for moving on-premises virtual machines into Amazon EC2. It supported scheduled, incremental replication so teams could prepare server images before a cutover.
Did AWS Server Migration Service require an agent on every source server?
No. Its main design point was agentless migration for supported virtual-machine environments. The source environment still needed the required connector and permissions, and compatibility depended on the hypervisor and workload configuration.
Could AWS SMS replicate a server more than once before migration?
Yes, the service supported scheduled incremental replication of virtual-machine images. That reduced the amount of data that had to be copied during the final migration window compared with starting from a fresh full copy.
Is AWS Server Migration Service still the current AWS migration tool?
AWS SMS was a legacy service, and AWS now promotes newer migration tooling such as AWS Application Migration Service for many server lift-and-shift projects. Confirm the current AWS documentation before designing a new migration around SMS.
