description Double Full Overview
A double full is a backward layout somersault with two complete twists, totaling 720 degrees of rotation. The gymnast performs the salto with the body held in a straight layout position while completing the twists before landing. It is used mainly in advanced artistic gymnastics routines, especially on floor exercise. Successful performance requires precise control of takeoff, body position, rotation, and landing.
help Double Full FAQ
What exactly does a double full rotate?
A double full is one backward layout somersault with two complete twists, so the twisting part totals 720 degrees. It is not two somersaults, because the word double refers to the two 360-degree twists. [FIG Code of Points](https://www.gymnastics.sport/publicdir/rules/files/en_TRA%20CoP%202022-2024.pdf)
How is a double full different from a double back?
A double back has two backward somersaults, while a double full has one backward somersault and two twists. The straight layout body shape is another defining part of a double full. [FIG Code of Points](https://www.gymnastics.sport/publicdir/rules/files/en_TRA%20CoP%202022-2024.pdf)
Where is a double full used in gymnastics?
The term is listed in the FIG 2022-2024 Trampoline Gymnastics Code of Points as a back somersault with 2/1 twists, and it is also used in tumbling and cheerleading. On a floor pass, the athlete still completes one layout salto before landing after the 720-degree twist. [FIG Code of Points](https://www.gymnastics.sport/publicdir/rules/files/en_TRA%20CoP%202022-2024.pdf)
Why is landing a double full difficult?
The gymnast must create enough height for one salto, keep a straight body while completing two axial turns, and prepare the landing before the rotation runs out. Losing the layout line or starting the twist late makes the 720 degrees arrive too close to the floor.
