description Fernando Germani Overview

Fernando Germani was a twentieth-century Italian organist whose reputation rested on technical command and an extensive career as a performer and teacher. He served as an organist at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, connecting an international concert career with a major church appointment. His work encompassed repertoire that required precise coordination between hands and feet.

Teaching formed an important part of his influence, with attention to the practical technique needed to play demanding organ music. This makes him relevant to organists studying the instrument's performance tradition as well as listeners interested in virtuoso playing.

His legacy is better understood through that combination of recital work and instruction than through a claim that he chiefly represented historical performance practice. Within the category, he offers an example of the organist as both concert musician and technical teacher.
