description Futura Overview

With circular forms and deliberately simple construction, Futura expresses a geometric approach to sans-serif lettering. Paul Renner designed it for the Bauer Type Foundry, which released it in 1927. Its connection with the modernist ideas associated with the Bauhaus helps explain its visual character, although Renner was not a member of that school. The design balances geometric shapes with adjustments that make those shapes work as letters.

Futura suits branding and graphic design that call for a clean, structured appearance. Its distinctive proportions give short headings an identity of their own, while related styles allow designers to develop a consistent treatment across printed material. The appeal lies in the visible geometry of the lettering rather than decoration or elaborate details. Different digital editions interpret the original family in different ways.
