Harimau Silat

Harimau means tiger in Indonesian and Malay, and the style is associated with Minangkabau traditions in West Sumatra. Its movements are modeled on the tiger's low, close-to-the-ground movement.

The style is known for crouching and ground-hugging positions rather than an upright boxing stance. This supports sweeps, evasions, leg attacks, and close control, and it is a defining feature of Minangkabau Harimau practice. Yes. Descriptions of the style mention kuncian, or locking actions, and tangkapan, or capture actions, applied to control the hands, feet, or neck and bring an opponent down. It is a style within pencak silat, not a single worldwide competition rulebook. The Indonesian film Merantau used fight choreography influenced by traditional Minangkabau silat harimau movements. The connection is about movement language and choreography, not evidence that the film is a documentary about the historical style.
