description Jetson Nano Developer Kit Overview
The Jetson Nano was revolutionary for bringing GPU compute to the edge, but it is now largely superseded by the Orin series. It remains valuable for educational purposes or projects that require a specific, older CUDA/GPU stack. For new, high-performance AI projects, the Orin Nano is strongly recommended, but the Nano is still a viable, lower-cost option for basic computer vision learning.
help Jetson Nano Developer Kit FAQ
What GPU is in the Jetson Nano Developer Kit?
The original NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer Kit has a 128-core Maxwell GPU, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 CPU, and 4 GB LPDDR4 memory. NVIDIA announced it in 2019 as a $99 developer kit. [NVIDIA announcement](https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/?p=13931)
What operating system and AI stack does Jetson Nano use?
NVIDIA's JetPack 4.2 software stack included Ubuntu 18.04, CUDA Toolkit 10.0, cuDNN, and TensorRT for the original kit. The supported software is tied to the older Jetson Nano release, so do not assume current JetPack versions for Jetson Orin will install on it. Does Jetson Nano boot from microSD?
The original developer kit boots from a removable microSD card, which you image from another computer. NVIDIA also provides a 40-pin GPIO header, CSI camera connector, USB ports, and Gigabit Ethernet for maker projects. Should I buy Jetson Nano or Jetson Orin Nano for new AI work?
The Nano remains useful for learning and projects built around its older CUDA stack, but Orin Nano is the newer family for higher performance. Jetson Nano's 128-core Maxwell GPU and 4 GB memory are much older than the platform NVIDIA introduced with Orin, so check framework and model requirements before choosing.
