description Milan Cathedral Overview
Construction of Milan's Duomo began in 1386 and continued through many later campaigns, creating a cathedral whose scale and detail reflect centuries of work. Marble surfaces and a dense array of spires define its appearance. Gothic design is central to the building, although its long development means that the finished structure cannot be explained solely as a product of one medieval moment. Formally the Duomo di Milano, it serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Milan and remains a Catholic place of worship.
Pilgrims encounter it as a religious institution, while visitors interested in architecture can study the relationship between its monumental form and intricate decoration. Its extended construction history is part of its character, offering evidence of how an ambitious cathedral project was continued and adapted by successive generations.
