His work is aimed primarily at middle-grade and young adult readers.

help Rick Riordan FAQ

What is the reading order for Percy Jackson & the Olympians?

The original series is five books: The Lightning Thief (2005), The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian (2009). Start with The Lightning Thief and read in publication order, since the quests build directly on each other.

What did Rick Riordan say about the 2010 Percy Jackson movie?

Riordan was openly critical of the 2010 film and its 2013 sequel, distancing himself from the adaptations and saying the scripts did not reflect his books. His dissatisfaction was part of why he took a hands-on role in the Disney+ reboot, which premiered in December 2023 with Walker Scobell as Percy.

What should I read after finishing Percy Jackson?

Riordan's shared universe continues with The Heroes of Olympus, a five-book sequel series blending Greek and Roman mythology, and The Trials of Apollo. He also wrote The Kane Chronicles, based on Egyptian mythology, and Magnus Chase, based on Norse mythology.

Is the Percy Jackson Disney+ series faithful to the books?

The 2023 Disney+ series follows the first novel, The Lightning Thief, far more closely than the 2010 film, with Riordan and his wife Becky deeply involved in production. Fans generally regard it as the more faithful adaptation in casting, plot, and tone.
