description Rouen Cathedral Overview
In Normandy, Rouen Cathedral records centuries of Gothic construction and alteration, with much of its fabric developed between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. Its tall architectural forms and stained glass express the religious and artistic ambitions of successive periods. As a Catholic cathedral, it has also held an important place in Rouen's civic life, linking the history of the building with that of the city. Serious damage during the Second World War forms another chapter in its history, alongside the work undertaken to preserve and restore it.
The cathedral remains a place of worship and pilgrimage. Architecture enthusiasts can examine a building shaped over time rather than by one uniform design, while art historians and visitors interested in European history can consider both its medieval development and the effects of later conflict on its surviving fabric.
