Scotch Cap Light is on the southwest corner of Unimak Island in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, beside Unimak Pass into the Bering Sea. It is not on Machias Seal Island in Maine.

When was Scotch Cap Light built?

The original station was built in 1903 as a wood tower, and a reinforced-concrete light and fog-signal building replaced it nearby in 1940. The Coast Guard's fact sheet lists the original station's characteristic as a fixed white light.

An earthquake-generated tsunami destroyed the station on April 1, 1946. All five members of the light-station crew were killed, making the site a major tragedy in Alaska lighthouse history.

A temporary unwatched light was set up in 1946, and a permanent replacement structure was completed in early 1950. The light was automated in 1971, after which later equipment included a skeletal tower.
