description Siena Cathedral Overview
Romanesque and Italian Gothic features meet at Siena Cathedral, also known as the Duomo di Siena. Much of its construction belongs to the twelfth through fourteenth centuries. Contrasting marble is central to its visual identity, appearing in the richly worked facade and the striped interior. These surfaces make materials and decoration as important to its character as the shape of the building.
The cathedral's decorated floor uses marble inlay and engraved designs, rather than being chiefly an arrangement of semiprecious stones. It forms part of an interior that rewards close attention to religious art and craftsmanship. Siena's principal Catholic cathedral remains a place of worship as well as a destination for pilgrims and art enthusiasts. Visitors interested in European religious history can examine how architectural form and worked stone contribute to a sacred setting.
