Son Doong Cave

Within Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Son Doong contains enormous limestone passages shaped by an underground river. It is widely described as the largest known natural cave by volume, a distinction separate from having the longest connected network of passages. Vast chambers and areas where the ceiling has collapsed contribute to its unusual interior, allowing daylight to reach parts of the cave and support vegetation below ground. Its scale makes exploration a demanding undertaking involving more than a conventional walk through a developed show cave.

The setting attracts experienced expedition participants and scientific researchers investigating subterranean environments. Speleologists study its passage formation, while its combination of dark chambers and sunlit openings creates interest in the cave's ecosystem. Son Doong stands apart through the dimensions of its main passages and the interaction between the underground river and openings to the surface.
