description Strasbourg Cathedral Overview
Pink sandstone and a single tall spire give Strasbourg Cathedral a distinctive presence in Alsace, France. The building developed over several centuries, with earlier Romanesque work followed by extensive Gothic construction. The spire was completed in 1439 and later held the distinction of being the world's tallest building. That date marks a major architectural milestone rather than the completion of every part of the cathedral.
The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Strasbourg and remains an active Catholic place of worship. Its architecture interests visitors studying how building methods and styles changed during long construction projects. Historians can also consider it within the cultural history of Alsace, while visitors drawn to religious monuments can examine its detailed stonework and imposing vertical form within a continuing setting of worship.
