description The Blackening Overview
Directed by Tim Story, The Blackening is a 2023 American horror comedy developed from a 2018 short by the comedy troupe 3Peat. A group of Black college friends gathers at a remote cabin for a Juneteenth reunion, where a masked killer forces them into a threatening game built around racial assumptions. The familiar isolated-cabin setup gives the film a framework for examining both horror conventions and the friends' relationships. Its central joke challenges the cliché that a Black character dies first by making the principal group Black.
Arguments about identity and shared history become part of the suspense instead of sitting outside the genre story. The film combines slasher danger with dialogue-driven comedy, making it suited to audiences interested in horror that examines its own habits. Its connection to blaxploitation is mainly through satire and representation; its immediate form is a contemporary ensemble horror comedy.
