description The Phoenix -Space- Overview

In deep space, four astronauts discover that their colleague Makimura has mysteriously died shortly following a cryptic note about his imminent murder. Though horrified by the news, the inoperable state of their spaceship leaves the crew no time to grieve, and they evacuate via escape pods. Determined to identify the culprit, the survivors begin to suspect fellow crewmate Kizaki, on account of a rivalry between himself and Makimura regarding the only female team member, Nana Ichinomiya. However, to their bewilderment, they notice Makimura's pod following them, yet failing to respond to attempts at contact.

help The Phoenix -Space- FAQ

Is The Phoenix -Space- part of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix series?

Yes. It's a chapter of the 2004 Hi no Tori (Phoenix) TV anime adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's lifework manga produced by Tezuka Productions. The manga's chapters span different eras of past and future, and Space is one of the future-set entries.

Do I need to watch the other Phoenix chapters before -Space-?

No. Like the manga, each chapter of Phoenix functions as a standalone story in a different time period, loosely connected by the Phoenix herself and Tezuka's themes of life, death, and reincarnation. You can jump in with Space directly.

Is The Phoenix -Space- related to the Phoenix 2772 movie?

They're separate works. Hi no Tori 2772 (also known as Space Firebird) was a 1980 theatrical film telling its own space-age story, while the 2004 TV series adapts the manga's chapters more directly. Both draw on the same Phoenix mythology but don't share continuity.

What happens in the Space chapter of Phoenix?

Four astronauts discover their colleague Makimura has died after a cryptic note predicting his murder, and with their spaceship inoperable they're forced to evacuate via escape pods. It plays out as a locked-room murder mystery in space, filtered through Tezuka's recurring themes of mortality and rebirth.
