description Trellis (Roots.io) Overview

Trellis is a Roots.io toolchain for developing and deploying WordPress sites, with automation built around Ansible. It provides repeatable procedures for provisioning Linux servers, configuring the components required by a WordPress installation, and releasing site code. Trellis is designed to work with Bedrock, another Roots project that organizes WordPress application code and dependencies for developers managing self-hosted environments.

help Trellis (Roots.io) FAQ

What does Trellis provision for a WordPress site?

Trellis uses Ansible to configure a Linux WordPress server with services such as Nginx, PHP, MariaDB, Composer, WP-CLI, SSL support, and caching components. Its configuration is kept in YAML and encrypted vault files.

Can Trellis deploy a Bedrock WordPress project?

Yes. A standard Trellis project contains a trellis directory for server configuration and a site directory for the Bedrock-based WordPress codebase. The documented deployment command is trellis deploy production.

Does Trellis support Windows directly?

The current Trellis documentation lists macOS and Linux as supported operating systems and says Windows is not supported directly. Windows developers can use a community-maintained WSL-oriented fork or another Linux environment.

How is Trellis different from managed WordPress hosting?

Trellis is an open-source, self-hosted toolchain that provisions servers you control through Ansible. Managed hosting usually hides server setup and maintenance behind the provider's platform, while Trellis exposes the infrastructure configuration.
