23 Thalia is a numbered asteroid in the inner part of the main asteroid belt. John Russell Hind discovered it in 1852, and it was named after Thalia, one of the nine Muses in Greek mythology. Thalia was associated with comedy and pastoral or idyllic poetry. The asteroid is commonly classified as S-type, a group generally associated with stony, silicate-rich surfaces, although such classifications are based on telescopic observations.
