description 36 Atalante Overview

36 Atalante is a large, dark C-type asteroid in the main belt, with published diameter estimates ranging from about 110 to 133 km. Hermann Goldschmidt discovered it on 5 October 1855, and French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier named it after Atalanta, the heroine of Greek mythology; Atalante is a French and German form of the name. Its rotation period is about 9.93 hours.
