description 38 Leda Overview
38 Leda is a main-belt asteroid discovered by French astronomer Jean Chacornac in 1856. It is named for Leda, the queen of Sparta in Greek mythology and the mother of Helen of Troy in the traditional account. Mythological versions also connect Leda with the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, and describe Zeus and the Spartan king Tyndareus as their respective fathers. The asteroid's name reflects the use of classical figures in nineteenth-century minor-planet naming.
