74 Galatea is a large asteroid in the main asteroid belt, the region of the Solar System between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel discovered it in 1862 at the Marseille Observatory in France. It is classified as a carbonaceous C-type asteroid, a spectral category generally associated with dark, carbon-rich bodies, and is studied as part of the population of primitive main-belt asteroids.
