86: Eighty-Six

The series centers around two protagonists: Major Vladilena "Lena" Milizé, an elite Alba military officer who serves as a Handler, and Shinei Nouzen, the squad leader of the Spearhead Squadron. Lena communicates with Shinei and his squad remotely via a device called the Para-RAID system, guiding them in battle against the Legion. Their evolving relationship forms the emotional core of the story.

The mechs piloted by the human Eighty-Six are called "Juggernauts" (officially designated as the M1A4 Juggernaut). These spider-like, multi-legged vehicles are lightly armored, heavily weaponized, and notoriously difficult to pilot. The Republic of San Magnolia falsely advertises that these drones are piloted by AI, masking the horrific reality that discriminated minority humans are forced to drive them.

The *86: Eighty-Six* series was written by Japanese author Asato Asato, with original illustrations provided by Shirabi. The light novels began publication in 2017 under ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint. The massive popularity of the novels led to the highly acclaimed anime adaptation produced by studio A-1 Pictures in 2021.

The primary antagonists are the "Legion," a swarm of highly advanced, fully autonomous, and self-replicating drones. Designed by the neighboring Giadian Empire before its collapse, the Legion operates using copied human consciousnesses and are programmed to exterminate all humans. They possess different models, including the heavily armored Lowe and the electronic warfare unit, the Eintagsfliege.
